Total Energy Company Technology
Total Energy Company inverter system delivers several technology breakthroughs (we are the first with several of these new technologies) that can revolutionize photovoltaic power systems. These technology breakthroughs include:
- Fully soft switching inverter system
All switching at zero current & zero voltage transitions
Minimizes switching energy loss
- MOSFETs instead of IGBTs
Minimizes conduction energy loss
- Ripple cancellation technology (New! Please see our explanation)
Minimizes ripple energy loss
Eliminates harmonics improving AC quality of power
- We have Eliminated large transformers and capacitors
Component cost is driven by semiconductors with steady cost reduction vs large transformers and capacitors whose cost is based on commodity materials (copper, iron etc).
- 2-stage converter/inverter system
Enables energy management systems improving consumption efficiencies
- Separate AC interfaces for local loads and grid
Enables full operation to local loads when grid is down without batteries
- Provides reactive power
Supports surge power for inductive loads without batteries or capacitor banks
This technology was initially developed by Dr. Jason Lai, Professor and Director of Virginia Tech's Future Energy Electronics Center. The DOE has already been a major investor in this core technology development such as the six phase converter system used by Total Energy Company. This technology has already been adopted for applications with Solid Oxide Fuel Cells and for next generation combat vehicles for the U.S. Army. Solid Oxide Inverter Solution 191KB pdf.
Total Energy Company has exclusive worldwide rights for this technology including several pending patents for renewable energy generation, Total Energy Company exclusive applications includes solar and wind, but does not including solid oxide fuel cells.
Total Energy Company initial product under development is a 5kW DC - DC Boost Converter for DC applications. This innovative soft switching combines a 37 to 70 vDC input (nominal 48vDC) to 200 / 400vDC output. As a bi-directional unit 48vDC products as well as 200 / 400 vDC products can be powered depending on need.
